After Saying Yes to a Family Move to Florida

A move to Florida may not be the right decision for all families…What I can say is that it remains one of the best decisions we ever for our family. So what does a family move to Florida look like?  Here’s where we found the best parts:

The Weather When You Move to Florida:

We moved to FL from New England where much of the year we found ourselves indoors.  We were sold on Florida after visiting in December and realizing the kids could be outside playing.  Gone were the hats, gloves/mittens, boots and snow pants that allowed for outside time.  Now – the kids much of the year in shorts, flip flops and bathing suits.

Outdoor Activities:

Make no mistake – with 3 young children, we were out and about on weekends in New England.  That said – Florida brings us a different type of outdoor activities.  Days are now filled at all of the amazing beaches, by the pool or exploring any number of the parks and local attractions that make up Northeast Florida (the historic district of St. Augustine is a family favorite to explore, the Jacksonville Zoo and trips out to some of the Springs have been amazing).  Jacksonville holds the distinctions of being home to the largest urban park system in the US.

Neighborhoods:

One of the things we appreciated most coming down here were the neighborhoods.  We came from a town with 1-2 acre minimum lots.  Great for peace and quiet – but not the most neighborly of places to call home.  Down here – there is always something going on, neighbors out walking dogs, kids on bikes, and neighbors chatting.

Schools:

St. Johns County is home to one of the top school districts in Florida.  The opportunities available to students really do enhance the education they’re receiving (specifically the professional academies).

Growth:

We wanted to find somewhere vibrant that matched our lifestyle. We appreciate being just outside the city limits but close enough to enjoy sporting events, concerts, museums and all that Jacksonville has to offer.
