Are you preparing to move? Read on for some tried and true tips for how to get moving boxes for less. After all – who wants to spend money on things that will likely end up in the recycle bin?
Ask for Boxes:
The most popular way to land boxes is to ask family and friends. I also recommend swinging into your favorite stores and asking if you could have some of their extra boxes (grocery stores and liquor stores are great to try). Liquor store boxes are great as they are often heavier and have internal dividers that can help protect more fragile items.
Check Neighborhood Facebook Groups:
This has become a popular way to source boxes and land the unique mix of boxes it takes to move a home. A word of caution – as these offerings are sporadic and limited – see if you can have friends who can help keep an eye out for posts.
Look for a Sale:
If you prefer to buy your moving supplies – locally, places like UHaul, Home Depot and local UPS Stores sell boxes. If you’re short on time or prefer the convenience of online – you can buy your boxes through Amazon, Staples or even ULine. When purchasing boxes – you should think about a range of sizes to accommodate everything you’ll have to pack. When we moved cross-country, I was introduced to china boxes (to protect our dishes, glasses and stemware). These boxes are stronger and will better protect your items. Additionally, wardrobe boxes make packing clothes a breeze (although when fully packed they are SUPER heavy).
How to Get Moving Boxes for Less:
Hopefully these tips will help you score your moving boxes for less. I’ve seen boxes make it through 3-4 moves as they get handed from neighbor to neighbor. You can also skip the boxes and opt for a re-usable item such as totes or plastic containers.
Additional Tips:
- Remember to start early. Not only does this help with gathering boxes, but it can allow you to start packing sooner as well.
- It’s ok to skip boxes – for things like clothes – consider garbage bags (just make sure they’re well labeled and don’t end up inadvertently in the garbage). Also pack items inside items when possible.
- At minimum you’ll need additional supplies including markers, shipping/packaging tape, labels and something to cut the tape (if you don’t use a shipping tape dispenser). Ideally, you’ll also have packing paper or bubble wrap to secure your breakable items.
- In gathering boxes early – they can be broken down to help make them easier to store. Just keep them somewhere where they won’t be prone to moisture or humidity.
